We are spoiled for choice when it comes to walking routes.

Leave the car at your accommodation and head out for the day on foot or for those that are further afield, access by bus or boat.

We have compiled a selection of walking routes where no car is required. 

Here are a few of the walks we have picked out for you, you can do them straight from the door.

A couple of walks you can do if you are staying in Keswick

The Derwentwater Walk 

The Derwentwater Walk is a waymarked path which will take you on a 10 mile scenic walk around Derwentwater, Queen of the Lakes. On flat and easy paths, the walk passes through ancient woodlands and along the shores of the lake. The scenery is stunning, with perfect picnic stops and cafés and restaurants en-route.

  • Distance - 10 miles
  • Time - Take a whole day out to enjoy this walk at a leisurely pace. It can also be enjoyed as shorter walks by taking a bus or catching a launch from one of the landing stages.
  • Starting point - By the lakeshore at the Keswick Launch.
  • Notes - On flat and easy paths, the walk passes through ancient woodlands and along the shores of the lake
  • Sites to see on route - Friar's Crag, Centenary Stone (seen in the picture) Chinese Bridge, Entrust Hand Sculpture.

If you would like to cut the route short you could hop on the Keswick Launch from Lodore or Low Brandelhow Jetties. 

Castlehead 

Castlehead is a low wooded hill close to Keswick town centre only 162metres high with splendid views for minimum effort.

It is a great route for families as children can gain a great sense of accomplishment from getting to the top of the hill.

You can see the full length of Derwentwater encircled by mountains as well as a bird's eye view over the town and Bassenthwaite Lake. A dial gives the name of 30 fells which can be seen. There is a scrambly bit just before the top which adds to the fun. The whole route from the Market Square can be accomplished in less than an hour and ends with a walk down to the lake and back through Hope Park.

Distance - 1.8miles

A walk to do if you are staying in and around Bassenthwaite 

Dodd and Dodd Wood 

Dodd Wood Summit Trail

  • Distance - 3 miles
  • 2-3 hours

The Dodd Wood Summit Trail is only a little over three miles but don't be fooled by the short distance as the first part of the walk takes you quite steeply uphill. The waymarked route takes you along forest paths and past waterfalls and streams with glimpses through the trees of Bassenthwaite Lake. As you round the corner you come to a magnificent panorama over Keswick and Derwentwater and a welcome bench on which to catch your breath and enjoy the view. From there it's not far to the summit from where there are 360deg views towards Keswick, Derwentwater and the surrounding fells, over Bassenthwaite Lake and on a clear day to the Solway Firth and the hills of Dumfries and Galloway

If you don't fancy a walk up to the top of Dodd summit, there is a network of waymarked trails through some of the huge Douglas firs that range from short trails of 1mile to 1.5 miles perfect for younger children 

There are also toilet facilities and a cafe on site 

If you are staying in Keswick you can take the X4 bus or 554 bus to get to Dodd Wood.

A walk to do if you are staying in or near Rosthwaite 

Rosthwaite Circular Walk

Rosthwaite, Watendlath, Grange in Borrowdale Circular Walk

  • Distance - 7.5 miles
  • Time - 4 - 4.5 hours
  • Public transport - Parking is limited so a good option is to take bus 78 from Keswick to Rosthwaite.

A circular walk starting from the village of Rosthwaite in the Borrowdale Valley near Keswick.

The route heads up and over to the hamlet of Watendlath and the idyllic tarn of the same name. 

It then takes you along the peaceful Watendlath Valley before reaching Derwentwater and finally following the River Derwent back to Rosthwaite.
